Supporting national ambitions
Growth in the subregion could contribute to a number of national priorities, linked to traditional economic growth, resilience and net zero.

Feeding the UK
Food and Farming Innovation is a competitive advantage sector for York and North Yorkshire and a key outcome of our growth journey is ensuring resilience within our food supply and increasing food security. We commit to support government in the development of a National Food Strategy.
Healing the UK
York and North Yorkshire will support innovation and advancements in health through our Life Sciences sector, as part of a wider northern cluster, ensuring our academic strengths translate into industry.

Powering the UK
We will support Government’s ambitions to make Britain a clean energy superpower and support Government’s Warm Homes Plan through driving growth in our Clean Energy sector through emerging technologies such as geothermal, alongside driving the increase of retrofit.
Connecting the UK
Through Rail Innovation, including AI and quantum communications to increase automation and efficiency, whilst maintaining a high level of security and resilience against cyber-attacks, we will support greater connectivity through rail.

Inspiring the UK
With internationally recognised heritage and culture assets, alongside Creative Industries putting us on the global stage with major players such as Netflix.
Protecting the UK
Through York and North Yorkshire’s strengths in cyber security, safe autonomy and potential defence opportunities.

Growing the UK
Growth is the number one mission of this government, and this is at the heart of the National Industrial Strategy. We will support this through our competitive advantage sectors, including: increasing the adoption of technology and new processes to improve productivity, increasing inward investment and export, and increasing commercialisation of innovation.
National Industrial Strategy
Central Government has now published a National Industrial Strategy, which sets out a 10-year plan to increase business investment and grow the industries of the future in the UK. The primary role of the strategy is to make it quicker and easier for businesses to invest and will provide the certainty and stability needed for long-term investment decisions.
There are synergies between the Local Growth Plan and the National Industrial Strategy, particularly in terms of growth ambitions, building resilience and targeting net zero. However, as the name suggests, the role of the National Industrial Strategy is to focus on sectors and priorities of national significance, whilst the Local Growth Plan is about recognising York and North Yorkshire’s strengths and opportunities for growth. Consequently, some of the sectors identified in our Local Growth Plan may not be reflected within the National Industrial Strategy and vice versa.
