York and North Yorkshire are well connected by road and rail, with York being a key hub for travel across the UK. However, not all areas benefit from this strong connectivity, especially rural locations. Ensuring both urban and rural areas have equal access to transport will improve economic opportunities for all.

Decarbonising Transport in York and North Yorkshire

Transport is the largest contributor to carbon emissions in the region. A shift towards zero-emissions transport and better digital connectivity is essential to achieving net-zero goals. Reducing reliance on private cars, especially in rural areas, and promoting sustainable transport options will help reduce the carbon footprint.

The Mayor's Local Transport Plan

The Mayor's Local Transport Plan will set out a long-term vision for improving transport across York and North Yorkshire, helping people travel more easily, safely and sustainably. 

Bus Service Improvement Plan 

The Bus Service Improvement Plan sets out a vision to improve bus services across the region, helping make journeys more reliable, affordable and accessible for residents and visitors. In October 2026, the Mayor and Cabinet Members of York and North Yorkshire Combined Authority approved the first steps in exploring options for local bus reform by endorsing the Mayor's intention to sign a Notice of Statutory Intent to Prepare an Assessment of Proposed Franchising Scheme. This notice was issued by Mayor David Skaith following this endorsement.
