Mayor’s statement following Department for Transport announcements

Mayor David Skaith reacts following Department for Transport’s announcements on Monday 8 July 2025 approving:

  • Haxby Station
  • A66 dualling
  • York Outer Ring Road (Phase 1)
  • A59 Kex Gill

The Mayor of York and North Yorkshire, David Skaith, said: “This is brilliant news for York and North Yorkshire. This investment in new and improved infrastructure will bring huge benefits for our region – driving growth, easing congestion, and resulting in quicker journeys. We put our case to Government, and they have listened.

“Haxby Station was our key ask in the Yorkshire Plan for Rail we submitted to Government in May. As part of the York to Scarborough line, the new station will unlock opportunities for more housing and business growth, increase sustainable travel options, reconnect neighbourhoods and offer greater access to jobs.

“It will bring 20,000 people to within 3km of a station, providing a rail connection into York for the first time in nearly 100 years.

“I also welcome the green light to complete dualling of the A66. As the vital road link between North Yorkshire to the M6, Cumbria, and Scotland, improved capacity will mean quicker and smoother journeys benefiting our residents, businesses and freight travel.

“There’s also good news for road schemes in York and North Yorkshire that will ease congestion and connect our communities. Phase 1 of the York Outer Ring Road will involve dualling sections of the A1237, while the new single-carriageway diversion at the A59 Kex Gill will reduce disruption caused by land slips in the area.

“I’m looking forward to working with the Government, City of York Council, North Yorkshire Council, Network Rail and other partners to see these schemes come to fruition, giving our communities the accessible, connected transport network that they deserve.”
