Road Safety Month brings together partners who are working together to invite residents to take part in the campaign to increase awareness and change behaviours to increase road safety.
Led by the Combined Authority and the Mayor, alongside the York and North Yorkshire Road Safety Partnership, Road Safety Month features a mix of education, and engagement activities across York and North Yorkshire, and is designed to encourage safer behaviour among road users to make travelling around the region safer for all, whether you’re a driving a car or motorbike, walking or cycling.
With a continued focus on education, enforcement, and engagement, the Road Safety Partnership remains committed to reducing serious injuries and fatalities on the region’s roads, and is making use of state of the art resources to help achieve this:
- The partnership’s motorcycle simulator provides a realistic, hands-on experience designed to improve hazard perception and decision-making, allowing riders to safely explore how to respond to common road dangers.
- Virtual reality headsets provide people with a passenger’s perspective of a car accident, demonstrating how distracted and unsafe driving can quicky lead to injuries and fatalities.
- Engagement vehicles give residents the chance to see how road safety is enhanced and enforced by the Police and Fire services.

The event explored current road safety challenges across the region and included an open Q&A session for members of the public to ask questions directly.
Deputy Mayor Jo Coles has already met with dozens of local Parish Councils through dedicated Road Safety Advice Surgeries to hear their concerns on road safety issues.
Jo Coles, Deputy Mayor for Policing, Fire and Crime said:
“Huge thanks to the Road Safety Partnership for the amazing work they’re doing this summer engaging with thousands of members of the public at the Great Yorkshire Show and other community events.
“One death on our roads is one death too many and I would urge anyone who can to attend one of their events to learn what more they can do to stay safe on our roads.
“The Mayor David Skaith and I are determined to use our first Road Safety Month to increase awareness of road safety and will continue to do what we can to keep everyone in our region safe.”
ACC Ben Moseley, Chair of the York and North Yorkshire Road Safety Partnership said:
“The York and North Yorkshire Road Safety Partnership is proud to support Road Safety Month and remains committed to working towards reducing the number of collisions, deaths and serious injuries on our roads and improving the safety of all road users.
Our partnership brings together key agencies including North Yorkshire Police, North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service, Yorkshire Ambulance Service, City of York Council, North Yorkshire Council, National Highways, and the Combined Authority.
Together, we take a strategic approach built on the Four Es:

- Engagement: Community initiatives like BikeSafe, FireBike, and Community Speed Watch
- Engineering: Infrastructure improvements and safety audits
- Enforcement: Data-driven deployment of resources and targeted campaigns
Through structured education, public events, and collaboration with local communities and businesses, we’re working every day to make our roads safer for everyone.”
