Housing
Affordable and Sustainable Housing in York and North Yorkshire
There is a pressing need for more affordable housing in York and North Yorkshire to retain young people and working-age households. The subregion faces a high affordability ratio for both urban and rural housing, making it difficult for many to access affordable living options. Rent prices are also disproportionately high, given the lower wage levels in the area.
Meeting Diverse Housing Needs
With a high proportion of elderly residents, housing development must be adaptable for all life stages. Affordable housing is crucial in rural areas where population decline and second-home ownership threaten the sustainability of local communities. A complex picture of homelessness and specialist housing shortages also adds to the housing demand.
Decarbonising the Housing Stock in York and North Yorkshire
With 24% of homes built pre-1919, York and North Yorkshire face challenges in retrofitting homes. Retrofitting involves fitting older properties with the latest energy-efficient heating technology. Decarbonising these homes provides opportunities for the construction sector and will help reduce costs for residents while meeting future housing standards. Retrofitting will also assist our region in its ambition to achieve net-zero by 2034.
Our Focus
