“By giving young drivers a head start in a safe environment, we are helping them build confidence and essential skills before facing the pressures of public roads. This results in a safer start and a better long-term driving record.”

John Beckford, co-designer of the Pathfinder Initiative, supported by the York and North Yorkshire Community Fund

The Community Fund supports local groups, organisations and individuals who want to deliver new projects that help people across North Yorkshire and the City of York be safe and feel safe. Established in 2013, the fund now brings together three funding streams:

About the Fund and Its Priorities

The Community Fund focuses on three key areas:

  • Communities & Places: Making priority locations safer
  • Victims: Preventing harm and reducing repeat victimisation
  • Offenders: Preventing offending and reducing reoffending

Projects should also align with priorities in the North Yorkshire Police and Crime Plan, which includes public safety, tackling serious and organised crime, improving visibility of local policing, and supporting the safety of women and girls.

Recent Investment

Police property fund

Each year, North Yorkshire Police seizes property as part of criminal investigations, or confiscates property by order of court.  Although we make every possible attempt to return items to their rightful owners, this isn’t always possible.

Thanks to the Police (Disposal of Property) Regulations 1975, if no one has claimed ownership of the property we have seized, we can auction it, and use the money to give funding to community and voluntary initiatives in North Yorkshire – particularly projects which could have a positive impact on reducing crime and disorder at a local level.

The Chief Constable of North Yorkshire Police and the Mayor have identified an additional £25,000 for the Community Fund annual budget to support smaller, community-based projects using the proceeds from this funding.

Movement, Activity and Sport Fund

The Mayor’s £2.75m Movement Activity and Sport Fund supports projects across York and North Yorkshire, designed to reduce inequalities and improve wellbeing through increased participation in movement, activity and sport at all stages of life.

This fund includes a £400,000 uplift for the Community Fund, aimed at supporting projects reducing anti-social behaviour via early intervention.

This additional funding has so far provided £177,000 to 8 projects across York and North Yorkshire.
