York and North Yorkshire has forged connections with Chinese officials to promote investment in the region.

The Invest in York and North Yorkshire team organised the visit to show off the assets, businesses and organisations in the Agri-Tech sector.

With a strong heritage in farming, fishing and food production along with extensive research and development assets, the region can shape agriculture for the future.

The Department for Business and Trade (DBT) has identified York and North Yorkshire as best place to lead the sector, which is attracting overseas investors.

Tracey Taylor-Preston, the Agri-Tech and Industrial Biotechnology sector development relationship manager at Invest in York and North Yorkshire, said:

“Our expertise in this area has led DBT to identify our region as the place for controlled-environment agriculture and horticulture.

“We earned this recognition with our extensive research and development capabilities, access to over 30 distribution centres, and supply chain connectivity.

“These existing strengths, along with our potential for high growth attracts investment from across the UK and the globe.”

The head of Agri-Tech and Sustainability at the DBT in Shanghai, Meilin Yi visited York today to learn more about BioYorkshire, the Centre for Novel Agricultural Products and the Biorenewables Development Centre. She said:

“This has been really a productive visit. We are going to explore collaboration with Chinese partners on trade, inward investment, academic projects and more. So we are looking at organising promotional events and delegation missions.”
It is a second international visit in York in just a few days, which signal’s the Mayor of York and North Yorkshire’s priority to drive growth in six key sectors including industrial biotechnology, agri-tech, manufacturing, creative and digital, rail and healthy ageing.
