More than £7million in Government money has been allocated to York and North Yorkshire to help fund the construction of nearly 300 homes on previously used land.
The Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government confirmed a further £7.3million to boost York and North Yorkshire Combined Authority’s Brownfield Housing Fund (BHF), a programme already set to deliver over 1100 new homes across the region – almost half being affordable.
David Skaith, Mayor of York and North Yorkshire, said: “Our region is home to beautiful rural and coastal towns but, with rising rents, costs and second home ownership, working families are being priced out.
“That’s why we’re taking action. I’m proud that Government has backed our work with a £7.3 million boost to build nearly 300 new affordable homes on brownfield land.
“This takes our Brownfield Housing Fund to a total of 1,400 homes across the region – a great step forward, but just the start. We’ll keep going until every young person has the chance to stay, build a life, and thrive in the communities they call home.”
The latest funding award will boost the existing BHF £17.3 million pot which is set to deliver 1,150 new homes, with 50 per cent being affordable.
Residents are now beginning to move into some of the homes which have already been built with support from the BHF.
In Aiskew near Bedale, the Broadacres housing association is providing 88 affordable homes with support from Homes England and more than £1million from the BHF.
York and North Yorkshire Combined Authority opened an application process for round three of the Brownfield Housing Fund allocations, in the spring.
Following a recent application process, YNYCA is now assessing bids and is expected to announce successful affordable housing projects this year.
