Hundreds of new adult learning courses designed to boost careers are available across York and North Yorkshire.
Overseen by York and North Yorkshire Combined Authority, courses cover skills local employers are looking for and support the county’s growing sectors.
All learning is flexible, available in-person, remotely and both during the day and evenings, tailored to the needs of the individual and to businesses. Courses range from entry level up to level four / five or can be completely bespoke.
A wide range of subjects are available through the Adult Skills Fund, Free Courses for Jobs and Skills Bootcamps, all delivered by expert providers commissioned by the Combined Authority.
David Skaith, Mayor of York and North Yorkshire, said: "We need to give people the tools they need to progress in their careers and reach their full potential.
"Whether you want to gain confidence in everyday skills like maths, step up into a senior role, or change direction entirely, these courses are designed around you.
"Seeing learners take control of their futures shows the true power of adult learning, and we’re proud to back them every step of the way."
Natalie Johnson, from Skipton, has been studying for maths qualifications, attending weekly classes held at the town’s library.
She said: “I never enjoyed maths at school and then something inside of me wanted to try and give it a go. I’ve got a fantastic tutor, and I’ve come on in leaps and bounds. I had my son when I was younger, so I’m picking up my career now. I hope it will be a step in the right direction to get a better job, a better career, and just better myself all round.”
Hana Smith, a 21-year-old carer from York, recently completed a level three adult social care course. She said: “I really enjoy working in healthcare, it’s something I’ve loved for a few years now, and I wanted to progress. By doing this course, I hope it will lead to me be able to work as a senior carer. To anyone thinking of doing a course, I’d say go for it – I’ve found it to be so helpful for my career.”
Available alongside Adult Skills Fund and Free Courses for Jobs courses, are Skills Bootcamps. These are technical courses of up to 16 weeks, giving people the opportunity to build up sector-specific skills and an offer of an interview with an employer upon completion. Alternatively, people already in work may gain more responsibility with their employer having completed learning. During the 2025-26 Skills Bootcamps programme in York and North Yorkshire, more than 400 learners have progressed their careers.
All courses may be fully or part-funded, dependant on eligibility criteria. Learners should contact providers directly to determine eligibility.
Learning opportunities have also been designed to support key sectors highlighted in the region’s Local Growth Plan. These sectors include clean energy, engineering biology and life sciences, rail innovation, creative industries and health and social care.
