Jo Coles, York and North Yorkshire Deputy Mayor for Policing, Fire and Crime, has released a statement responding to North Yorkshire Police's first planned use of Live Facial Recognition technology.
Earlier this year, I sought and received assurances from North Yorkshire Police on the deployment of live facial recognition technology in York and North Yorkshire, on issues including data protection, oversight, deployment criteria and the risk of mission creep.
North Yorkshire Police have today confirmed their first planned use of this technology, in York city centre on 23 September.
It is right that the police make use of new tools that may help keep people safe as the nature of crime changes, but this must always be done responsibly and with robust safeguards.
I will continue to seek regular updates from North Yorkshire Police in my Online Public Meetings to ensure this technology is being used fairly and transparently, and encourage members of the public to submit their questions to these meetings if they have any additional concerns.
