Many people will be feeling worried and concerned about the Government's proposals around the early release of prisoners.
I understand and share those concerns.
At a time when the criminal justice system continues to face significant pressures, it is vital that the safeguards being introduced as part of the early-release scheme, including GPS tagging and monitoring arrangements, are robust and effective.
I met recently with Serco to better understand the processes they have in place and am seeking assurances from both North Yorkshire Police and our supporting victims’ services that these measures will be closely monitored and that appropriate protections are in place.
It's welcome news that the Ministry of Justice have recently provided York and North Yorkshire with an additional £195,000 funding to support victims which will enable us to commission more flexible support for services for those who will be impacted by these changes.
We're looking at how we work with partners to ensure this reaches the people who need it most and where it can have the most impact.
