New technology supporting victims and witnesses in York and North Yorkshire

Witnesses across York and North Yorkshire are benefitting from technology that allows them to give evidence without travelling to a distant courthouse, following the closure of Northallerton Magistrates Court in 2019.

The 'Live Links' system enables people to participate in court proceedings remotely, ensuring that the closure of the local court has not left residents without proper access to justice.

The technology is proving particularly valuable for witnesses of domestic violence and sexual assault, who can give evidence from a separate location, providing reassurance that they will not find themselves in the same building as their abuser during what is already an incredibly difficult process.

Deputy Mayor Jo Coles, who chairs the Local Criminal Justice Partnership, has been a longstanding advocate for the system and has championed its rollout across the region.

Jo Coles, Deputy Mayor for Police, Fire and Crime said:

When Northallerton Magistrates Court was closed in 2019 a live link was promised for local residents who may need to act as witnesses in cases being heard elsewhere. But the process of delivering that link stalled.

When I came into post I sought to ensure past promises were delivered and I am delighted the Live Link system is now operational .

David Skaith, the Mayor and I are determined to deliver safe places for all across our region. That includes ensuring that witnesses to serious crimes are properly protected and supported.

The Witness Service provides free, independent support to both defence and prosecution witnesses in every criminal court in England and Wales, helping people feel informed, supported and more confident, so they can give their best evidence.

Nicola Waite, Team Leader at the Witness Service, said:

The Witness Service exists to help witnesses feel more confident when giving evidence in a criminal trial, and to make the court process feel less daunting.

So we wholeheartedly support measures which allow witnesses to give evidence remotely, ensuring they feel as safe and comfortable as possible.

Importantly, the Witness Service will still be there to explain, listen and answer questions, offering emotional and practical support every step of the way.
