Plans to unlock a multi-million-pound redevelopment of Scarborough will be considered by leaders next week, with a new Brunswick Centre at the heart of the town’s regeneration.
A report published today outlines proposals for a £7 million funding package from the York and North Yorkshire Combined Authority, which will go before members for decision at a Cabinet meeting at Scarborough Town Hall on Friday, 6 November.
The proposed Combined Authority funding forms part of a wider £18.5 million public investment package, backed by an £8 million loan from North Yorkshire Council and £3.5 million from the Pride in Place initiative.
If approved, the backing will enable the project to progress a full business case and submit an updated planning application ahead of construction starting on site.
The transformation of the Brunswick Centre is expected to act as a major catalyst for the wider regeneration of Scarborough town centre. Once complete, the redevelopment is projected to create more than 400 permanent jobs, alongside 160 jobs during the construction phase.
David Skaith, Mayor of York and North Yorkshire, said:
"High streets and town centres need our backing, not quick fixes. Redeveloping the Brunswick Centre is set to be the catalyst for a wider revival of the town.
"We will take this plan to Cabinet next week as we take the next major step in our ambitious journey for Scarborough with our first Mayoral Development Zone."
Cabinet members will also consider a recommended £1 million grant for public realm and active travel improvements along Westborough and Vernon Road. This investment would improve pedestrian and cycle connectivity between Scarborough Railway Station and the new town centre development.
The launch of Scarborough's Mayoral Development Zone (MDZ) forms part of a wider strategy to accelerate growth and unlock major housing and commercial sites.
Scarborough is one of three targeted Mayoral Development Zones formally established across the region, alongside zones in York and Selby.
