Renewing our commitment to Victims and Survivors across York and North Yorkshire

Oct 9, 2026

York and North Yorkshire Combined Authority is highlighting progress made over the past year to support victims and survivors of domestic abuse across the county, while reaffirming its commitment to tackling abuse and improving access to support.

Domestic abuse continues to have a devastating impact on individuals, families and communities. Supporting victims and survivors and preventing violence and abuse remains a key priority for Mayor David Skaith and Deputy Mayor for Policing, Fire and Crime Jo Coles.

Over the last 12 months, partners across York and North Yorkshire have worked together to strengthen support available to those affected by domestic abuse. This has included expanding safe accommodation provision, investing in specialist domestic abuse services and improving access to support for people living in rural areas, where isolation and distance can create additional barriers to getting help.

Work has also continued with criminal justice partners to improve the experience of victims navigating the justice system. This includes the opening of Live Link facilities in Northallerton, helping vulnerable victims and witnesses to give evidence in a way that can feel safer and more accessible.

October also marks one year since the launch of the York and North Yorkshire online Service Directory. The directory brings together a wide range of services supporting people affected by domestic abuse and other forms of violence against women and girls, making it easier to find help and support in one place.

These developments have been made possible through strong partnership working between local authorities, North Yorkshire Police, health partners, criminal justice agencies and voluntary and community sector organisations.

Despite this progress, partners recognise there is still much more to do.

Deputy Mayor for Policing, Fire and Crime Jo Coles said:

"Domestic abuse has no place in our communities. I am proud of the progress we have made over the last year, particularly in strengthening support for victims and survivors and improving access to services, but there is still much more to do.

"Domestic Abuse Awareness Month is an opportunity not only to reflect on that progress, but to renew our commitment to ensuring every victim is heard, supported and able to access help when they need it.

"Together with our partners, we will continue to work towards a safer York and North Yorkshire where everyone can live free from abuse, fear and violence."

Residents can access support and information through the York and North Yorkshire Support Services Directory: https://www.northyorkshire-pfcc.gov.uk/how-can-we-help/servicedirectory/

Although the directory is principally aimed at women and girls, many of the services featured offer support to people of all genders, including men and boys.
