Sherburn is set for a fresh programme of markets, events and public space improvements after securing £41,976 through the Vibrant and Sustainable High Streets Fund.
The funding will support a new High Street regeneration project designed to increase footfall, support local businesses and create a more welcoming town centre for residents and visitors.
David Skaith, Mayor of York and North Yorkshire, said:
"Our high streets are where our communities come together. That’s why I’m backing creative ideas from the people who know their area best with my High Street Fund.
“By supporting Putting the Heart into Sherburn High Street, we are helping to develop a marketplace in Sherburn in Elmet to deliver an enhanced retail offering, and exciting community events at the heart of the High Street.
“This is one of 66 projects we’ve supported across York and North Yorkshire helping to transform our high streets into vibrant destinations that residents and visitors will want to return to again and again.”
Plans include a regular monthly market alongside larger seasonal events throughout the year, including Easter and Christmas celebrations. A flexible market space will also be developed to create a central hub for community activity and give small and emerging traders the chance to test new ideas locally.
The project was shaped by a wide group of people from across the community, including local businesses, volunteers, community organisations, Elmet Social Club, NY Councillor Bob Packham and Sherburn in Elmet Town Council.
The project has already received a strong response from the local community following an announcement on social media. Residents welcomed the plans for regular markets and events, with many praising the collaborative effort behind the application.
Comments included:
“The markets sound fantastic. Great news!”
“Great news. Well done to all involved and thank you for all the time you’ve put in!”
The Town Council, alongside local businesses and community groups involved in the application, is now looking forward to bringing more people into the town centre and supporting a more vibrant and sustainable future for the high street.
Gaynor, Sherburn in Elmet Town Council, said:
"The Town Council, along with local businesses and community groups who collaborated on the grant application, is very much looking forward to bringing new customers to our high street and supporting its continued vibrancy and sustainability. "
